Description
* * * * * Offered here is an original 1928 MGM 40,000 MILES WITH LINDBERGH ONE -SHEET MOVIE POSTER. Unquestionably the most historic poster ever offered for sale on ebay. This poster was made in 1928 to advertise the MGM film about the great aviator and American hero. CHARLES LINDBERGH In 1927 Lindbergh redefined "famous" and set a new standard for celebrity in the 20th Century. He achieved the first solo, non-stop flight across the Atlantic, from Roosevelt Field, Long Island, NY to Paris in 1927 in his "Spirit of St. Louis" airplane. The aftermath set off a firestorm of notoriety and Lindbergh became an overnight world-wide sensation. Lindbergh was named Time Magazine's "Man of the Year" for 1927. The dance craze, the "Lindy Hop" became all the rage and numerous popular songs about the aviator swept the country - "Lucky Lindy" and "Lindbergh (The Eagle Of The U.S.A.)" were the biggest. It was Lindbergh fever and everyone had it. Star Wars created a similar blast of excitement and interest when it was first released in 1977. Star Wars was a work of fiction - Lindbergh was the real deal! 1928 1928 was a big year for the new American hero. "Lucky Lindy" won just about every award offered by society. In Washington, D. C., on March 21, the President of the United States (Calvin Coolidge) even awarded Lindbergh the Congressional Medal of Honor that had been voted by special act of Congress. The citation reads: "For displaying heroic courage and skill as a navigator, at the risk of his life, by his nonstop flight in his airplane, the "Spirit of St. Louis," from New York City to Paris, France, 20-21 May 1927, by which Capt. Lindbergh not only achieved the greatest individual triumph of any American citizen but demonstrated that travel across the ocean by aircraft was possible." Pretty amazing words coming from the top people in the country. A few weeks after the Medal of Honor ceremony Lindbergh presented his famous monoplane, Spirit of St. Louis, to the Smithsonian Institution, in Washington, D. C. In 1928 MGM also released "40,000 MILES WITH LINDBERGH" the documentary film advertised on this poster. The film stars the one and only Charles Lindbergh. MGM spared NO expense creating this extraordinary poster image. They called on the services of thier TOP poster artist - Ted Ireland also known as "Vincentini." The likeness and charm of Lindbergh was masterfully captured on this amazing stone litho poster with class and distinction. A finer poster from the era does not exist. In fact this poster is the only known original. No poster is rarer than this one! I have set a very reasonable price for it: The poster market on elite posters has skyrocketed the past couple of years. Perspective: 1- Not many great portrait one sheets from the 1920's surface for sale. Just a few months ago a nice one sheet poster sold on eBay - The Eagle (United Artists, 1925) starring Rudolph Valentino - eBay Item number: 170128917278 (It still can be seen now). The poster sold for 38,837.50 with the buyers premium. The Eagle is a great poster but not as important or in the league as this amazing Lindbergh. There are many Valentino posters out there to buy, but this is the ONE AND ONLY ORIGINAL LINDBERGH THAT IS KNOWN TO EXIST! 2 - The 40,000 MILES WITH LINDBERGH is a short subject film. Short subject posters are the RAREST of all the movie posters. Here is a short subject poster that just sold on ebay for about $29,000 - Violent is the Word for Curly (Columbia, 1938) - eBay Item number: 170128915150 (It still can be seen now). It is advertising a 3 Stooges film from the 1930's. Not nearly as rare a poster and not anywhere near as nice as the Lindbergh. 3 - A few months back on eBay a poster for a 1935 B rated Universal film "The Black Cat" sold for over $250,000 - And Nov 13, 2007 a poster on the Bride of Frankenstein sold for over $334,600 eBay Item number: 170164275084 - It still can be seen now. "The Black Cat" is a cute poster but not nearly as rare or anywhere near as important as the 40,000 MILES WITH LINDBERGH offered here. The Bride of Frankenstein is definitely up there with this LINDBERGH for importance. However, I'm only asking about 1/10th the price the Bride sold for. 5 - Nov 13, 2007 A Barbara Stanwyck 1933 "Baby Face" 1-Sheet poster sold on eBay for $71,700.00 Not at all in the league as this 40,000 MILES WITH LINDBERGH 1-Sheet but it just shows how strong the market is on vintage posters. This 40,000 MILES WITH LINDBERGH is truly one of the BEST and most important film posters ever created! The poster has been archivally linen-mounted. The poster has been stored in ideal conditions - Flat (not rolled) between acid-free paper. I will ship the poster flat or roll it up and ship in a tube, depending on which the buyer prefers. Please write with any questions, and if you are in the market for top quality original Vintage film posters, then please click here
