Description
nuch54 store Hello folks and welcome Up on the auction block for your bidding pleasure is the, highly sought after, and difficult to find: ORIGINAL Genaro de Carvalho Signed TAPESTRY This beautiful art tapestry is hand made, by renowned artist Genaro De Carvalho. The piece measures 36" x 48" (36 inches by 48 inches). The colors are strong and vibrant, and fill the tapestry with awe and wonder! Abstract in design, it still brings to it Genaros influences of cubism and nature. To me, it looks to be a scarecrow in corn field, but as they say, art is in the eye of the beholder, and who would not want to behold this piece to grace any wall in their home or office. The back of the piece has mounting rings already attached for ease of display. There is also the artist’s name and address, possibly written in his own hand, in back the corner. As near as I can tell, it reads: Original de Genaro de Carvalho atelier Campo Parque Campo Grande 3 Bahia Brazil If you look closely, there is a start of a sketch on the back, possibly the start of another piece he had in mind? There are a few frays on the edges of the piece, which can be expected of a piece being 50 or more years old, but nothing major. Please see pictures for close-ups. I have many more pictures; if there is a particular point of interest you would like me to email you. The artist has quite an interesting background and, unfortunately, had an early demise. I have somewhat of a translation (From Portuguese to English) of a biography of the artist below, but to get a more detailed bio and to see other examples of his beautiful works, please check out this link:http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=pt&u=http://www.revistaohun.ufba.br/html/genaro_de_carvalho.html&sa=X&oi=translate&resnum=2&ct=result&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dgenaro%2Bat%2Bthe%2Bhotel%2Bof%2BBahia%2BFestas%26hl%3Den Genaro de Carvalho (Salvador – 1926-1971) Despite having started his career as a painter, Genaro Oak is regarded as the pioneer of modern tapestry in Brazil - used as a means of expression for his painting and drawing. Encouraged by the father, Painter, amateur Genaro started early with brushes and paint. In 1944, at the age of 17, he participated in the 1st Hall of American Art, Cultural Association in Brazil-United States, located in the area of St. Vincent Street. This was the first exposure of members of the 1st generation of modern Bahia, the pioneer trio consisted of Genaro de Carvalho, Carlos Bastos and Mario Cravo Jr. These young artists exhibiting debut with a vast majority of academic painters. At the age of 18 he went to Rio de Janeiro study drawing in Brazilian society of fine arts, along with franciscus cravo, Carlos rubem Valentinus Bastos, and carybé, among others. In 1949 he traveled to Paris, Receiving a scholarship from the French Government. He was student of École National de Beaux Arts and the Painting Workshop of the cubist Andre Lhota. Undoubtedly this also marked the influence of Henry Cavalleiro to the original works of Genaro de Carvalho. Henry, who is considered primarily an impressionistic, brings strong identification with the French painter Paul Cézanne (1839-1906). This search of cézanniana and fundamental forms inspired the relationship of color modeling of Genaro’s early works. GENARO AND TAPESTRY Genaro de Carvalho discovered the tapestry in Europe. Fascinated by tapestries in the gallery above the Latin Quarter, he begins to implement their style in 1950 in the weft yarn-style tapestry known as' bass lisse". Who started this path is not indicated in any of the sources consulted, and it does not appear in any biography that his master, Andre Lhota has had any experience in this area. One strong possibility is that Genaro de Carvalho, having attended the workshop of Fernand Léger (France, 1881 - 1955), who was a master of Tarsila do Amaral and Clark, and labeled as cubist, as well as painter and designer. His artistic experimentation identifies himself with that of Genaro. Returning to Salvador in 1950, Genaro organizes the first workshop of the tapestry of Brazil, teaching embroidery, and transform his oil paintings into the parts of fabric. This is the same year that Genaro Oak creates a mural at the hotel of Bahia, measuring 200 square meters, on the Festas Populares state entitled; Regional Feasts, or according to some authors Celebrations Regional Bahianos. In Genaro de Carvalho’s own words, he claims "I have no compromise with the loom, nor the rack, and I do not want to be a master of anything. I prefer the adventure of the experience. I do not want to defend an academic tapestry, but the cloth as artistic expression. It can be embroidered, fabric, wrought, painted, applied to canvas or pieces of wood, collages, other fabrics, cut or presented in any form. I use me as my material. At this point, I am an artist absolutely 'pop'” This tapestry would grace the wall of any room in your home, office or else where! Shipping will be $19.99 and insurance extra in the Continental USA.
