Description
D.W. Griffith (1875-1948) was the most important and influential director in the history of American film. He has been called "the father of film technique, " "the man who invented Hollywood, " and "the Shakespeare of the screen." In 1920, he established United Artists
D.W. Griffith's personally owned and used polo jodhpurs and mallet. Used by Griffith in the late 1920s while playing at the "El Vaquero Saddle Club" in Los Angeles. These items were given to Hollywood make-up artist (and co-polo player) Carl Russell (1903-1981). Russell was one of Hollywood's best known make-up artists in a career that spanned from the silents to the early 1970s. Purchased directly from the widow of Carl Russell and comes with copy of a signed letter stating the history of these items.
Mallet is 52" in length, solid wood shaft. Pants are tan cotton with overall light soiling. One tear near crotch area and one in rear of pants, both of which could be easily sewn. Leather on inseam and buttocks area is worn but in good condition. A rare piece of Hollywood history as items from this great director are virtually non existent. Selling only one pair of polo pantis, with the aroma of a 100 year old fart, polo mattel, letter of ownership and bed sheet not include. THIS IS FOR REAL, AND A ONE OF A KIND HOLLYWOOD FIND.
